Top 5 Business Mistakes - Pt 3

This week I started to share with you the Top 5 Mistakes most self-employed people and business make, when trying to make money?

What were those Top 5 Mistakes?

1.  We are unclear about what we offer
2.  We are unclear about who we are offering it to
3.  We keep ourselves a secret!
4.  We imagine we are doing things when we are actually just thinking about it
5.  We don’t believe we are worth it (and often undercharge!)

Let me elaborate a bit…..today I’ll cover Mistake #3.

1.  We keep ourselves a secret!

Many times, when talking to Money Gym clients about why they are not achieving the ezine signups and sales they would like, whether it be their own products or affiliate sales (where you recommend other people’s stuff and earn commission), I am shocked to hear that they expect to make sales from tiny trickles of traffic.

I tell them, over and over again, something that I was taught by my first business coach Chris Barrow, it takes getting in front of 1000 people to make a sale.

This formula comes from Chris’ background in financial services sales - a tough environment - where he reckoned that you had to call 1000 people to get 100 to talk to you.

You have to talk to 100 people to get 10 appointments.

You have to get 10 appointments to make one sale.

Let me qualify this as I think the word “sale” is misleading.  It suggests that if you are a “better” or more aggressive sales person, you can convert more appointments to sales.

I prefer to say that, if you can get 10 appointments to discuss whether your product or service is a fit, for that potential client or customers problem or pain, then one person will BUY.

See the subtle difference?  They will buy, rather than you will sell.  Takes all the pressure off you actually.

So, following this through, assuming that you get in front of enough of the right kind of people, with a great solution for their problem, then they will buy your solution.

He went on to say that you need to build a reservoir of potential future customers who know who you are and what you do, and more importantly what you can DO FOR THEM.

Filling the reservoir in the early days is hard work.  Imagine a little stream running along the ground till it meets a big hole, and starts, very slowly to fill that hole up with water.  Eventually it will, and then, for every new drop that goes in, a drop will spill out and those are your customers.

That reservoir is filled up out of the 100 people you talk to, out of the 1000 calls.  The 10 people are the ones that express at interest in your product or service.  The one person out of the 10 is the one that buys.

Tranlating that for a second to the online world, we say that you need 1000 unique visitors coming to your website, to be able to attract 100 potential future customers into your reservoir of people who know who you are and what you do, and how your solution can help them.

You need to ask yourself this burning question!

If I need to get in front of 1000 people to make a sale, how many sales do I want, and how quickly can I get in front of the required number

But what do we do, when we are new in business?

We keep ourselves a secret!

We take tiny marketing actions rather than huge marketing actions.

We put notices on boards in supermarkets and health clubs.  We give a few cards to our hairdressers, our garage, our friends.

In short, we do everything we can to avoid exposing ourselves to the large numbers of people that we need to expose ourselves to, in order to build our reservoir and make the sales.

So now you know that, what can you do differently?

Think about the billion people online, on broadband, right now.

Think about the huge overseas markets coming online and getting access to Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL and the other big search engines.

Think about the easiest, fastest, cheapest ways to get in front of thousands, hundreds of thousands if not millions of potential future customers.

Start with a blog, even if you haven’t thought of a product or service yet.

Tell your story, your story of discovery, your tale of venturing out into the big wide online world.

I’d love to read it!

YOUR 3 ACTION STEPS:

1.  Read the rest of my emails this week

2.  Listen to Richard White and Daniel Wagner’s webinars on www.MoneyGymRadio.com - they were great!

3.  Join Money Gym Silver or come along to one of our “Money Gym Presents…..” workshops in Central London.

THEN WE CAN HELP YOU TO:

1.  Start a blog right now even if you don’t know what to sell - tell your story of discovery.  The search engines will come and then so will the visitors.

2.  Look for good products or services, sign up to their affiliate schemes and recommend them to your visitors.

3.  Think about your expertise, skills, knowledge, experiences and wonder if any of the billion people online could learn anything from you.  Create ebooks, how to manuals, camtasia videos, memberships sites.  Then go out there and find the people who need you and want to buy from you.

Sound good?

Great!

See you there!

Nicola

Rick Butts Lets Rip!

I am joes emai list open letter to internet marketers

Hi,

I am Joe’s email list.

Joe calls me his list, his peeps, and sometimes just “the list.”

But, I am not a list, really, I am not a crowd, or an audience. I am not “everyone out there” as they teach new broadcasters to say.

I am me.

One single person with hopes, dreams, stresses and fears.

In many ways I am just like you - the way you describe yourself in your hungry years before you went to that life changing event, read the book, and started making money online.

I get email from you Joe.

I can’t remember for sure, but I think I “joined” one day when you offered a free report or video and I had to put my email address in - and confirm - in order to see it.

In my inbox, Joe, your email looks just like the personal emails I get from my daughter or son, and sometimes, sadly, from my ex.

Now that you’ve been sending me email - as well as some of your “good friends” - I have begun to be able to see in a glance that they are just offers, sometimes disguised as important messages, sometimes blatantly, not.

Whenever I see the word “this” in your subject lines, like - “this won’t last long” - or “have you seen this?” I know it’s an offer.

Since the Product Launch Formula I and especially II - I’m amazed at how many times per month I am literally inundated with emails from so many people all about the same exciting product.

They arrive over multiple days, culminating in a bonus orgy that is just overwhelming.

I read a clever post in a forum once, that “the bonuses are so comprehensive, it makes me wonder what is covered in the course, that is not already covered in the bonuses!”

That made me laugh.

I’m writing you today, to share something important about myself - and I hope you’ll take the time to consider my feelings, ok?

I have to get off of some of these lists.

The volume of email and the distraction of chasing the offers is just crippling my time, my focus, and my ability to get things done.

Note from Nicola:  Now you know I love internet marketing but I’m hearing the plea.  We bought Traffic Secrets because it looks great and it was marketed brilliantly.  But Rick Butts is right when he goes on to say, in this excellent article, try and buy these launches via an affiliate link of someone who delivers extra value and not just as bonuses, but consistently.  We bought ours via Stompernet’s link, who were offering an excellent 15 CD course “bonus” - just the one bonus thank the lord - and who had delivered some great content videos in the run up to their own launch recently.

Wealth Twitterings

I’m embarking on an interesting project at the moment….turning my Money Gym ebook into Wealth Twitterings.  I’m trying to turn each Wealth Tip into a twitter of 140 characters or less, but I’m finding that each Tip makes a few twits so I will end up with more than 101 twits, more like 365 which is one twit a day.  I’ve done six today already because I’m impatient….check them out on this blog on the daily update, or visit http://www.Twitter.com/wealthcoach to follow  us, and then download Twhirl which is great fun, to keep up to date.

Learning To Love….Wordpress

OK, I admit it, I’ve had a love/hate relationship with Wordpress. I’ve been a deliriously happy Typepad user for years, attaching it to my site by means of a nice neat button, and back again to the site, to get the SEO. My blog had a 4/10 google ranking and my site had the same, so benefited from the many links backward and forward. Since moving my blog to Wordpress and hosting it on my domain, that has remained at 4/10 and the blog is now 3/10 even though it’s got many more original posts on it than the Typepad one.

After the last World Internet Summit in London 2007, however, I took on board that all the “big dogs” are using it and when my buddy Mike Stewart said “I don’t know why I’m using it but Armand told me too!” I came home, downloaded the software for free from www.Wordpress.org, tried some plugins and after a long frustrating weekend trying to get it to work, I gave up on that one.

Then I turned to ex-internet coaching client Lea Woodward for help, as she was much more techie than me and had an army of geeks to outsource the tricky bits to.

Turns out my server 1and1.co.uk needed some serious tweaking before it would let me hook up my new MySql database with the blog software. Most hosting like my preferred one FunkyDomainNames will let you do a very sexy one click install from the CPanel - takes nanoseconds.

Of course installing it is one thing, making Wordpress look nice and do what you want it to do is another. I struggled for weeks to get images in my posts! For this you will need to choose a “widget ready” theme AND install about 20 different plugins.

Here is my list of the Top Essential & Most Sexy Plugins For Wordpress

** Please feel free to comment below and let me know which plugins I am missing **

1. Akismet - stops comment spam and comes pre-installed, you just need to activitate it (in Plugins) and then add your API key, which you get from setting up an account at www.Wordpress.com

2. OneClick - install this first, by downloading the zip file to your computer, extracting the files and uploading via FTP the main OneClick folder to your wp_content > plugins folder on your server. Go activate it in your Wordpress control panel, then thereafter, after you have downloaded the zip file for any plugin to your computer, you can do everything else from within Wordpress. Remember to use the pull down menu to choose plugin rather than theme, as it defaults to theme.

3. Sign-out-reminder - does what it says on the tin!

4. Wordpress-automatic-upgrade.1.1 - this makes the business of upgrading your software effortless, if you choose the “automatic” option. Amazing to watch!

5. Feedburner_feedsmith_plugin_2.3 - you need to open a free Feedburner account and “burn” a feed for your blog. Not only will Feedburner give you better statistics, but you can monetize your blog posts and feed page with Google Adsense.

6. adsense-manager.2.5 - put your Adsense publisher CA in here and monetize your blog

7. better-comments-manager1.5 - helps you manage comments more easily and picks up inbound links to your blog

8. google-sitemap-generator.3.0.2 - automatically generates and updates your site map for Google

9. Maxblogpress-ping-optimizer.zip - if, like me, you save each post about five times, before you are happy with it, this plugin stops your blog spamming the ping sites, particularly ping-o-matic, who can block your blog for over-pinging! MaxBlogPress has some nice plugins generally.

10. ImageManager2.41 - never again struggle to put pics in your posts, or have to upload your pic to your server before you can use it, or worse still, LOSE a pic that you just KNOW you uploaded/used before on your blog. This plugin did disappear last time I upgraded my Wordpress software but I just reuploaded it using oneclick and it worked fine again.

11. All-in-one-bookmarking-button - puts that sexy little bar at the bottom of all your posts that enables your visitor to digg you, stumble you, delicious you or technorati you (and many, many others)

12. TwitThis_for_WordPress_1.1 - if you twitter - and you should as it updates your blog with your twits, you can twit on the move, it updates your Facebook and MySpace Profile and it twits to your followers when you post on your blog (AMAZING!!) - then you need this on your blog! not sure which of the Twit tools listed here does what, but you need both (take it from me!)

13. Twitter-tools.1.1b1 - as above!

14. Viddlercomments - enables people to post a comment using video via their webcam on your blog - watch this one grow and grow!

15. Max-banner-ads - just getting into this one but man, it’s really, really good. Enables you to put your own banners or OTHER PEOPLE’s in various locations on your blog, and gives great stats. You can start to charge for banner ads on your blog!

Hope this was helpful. and if you hit the comments link (or the little camera) you can leave your favourite plugins for us! Cheers, Nicola

Brett McFall, Oil Prices & Me - The Truth!

brett_mcfall Brett McFall, Oil Prices & Me - The Truth! It’s official - Brett McFall and I are …………in total agreement!

To give you a bit of background to what I’m about to tell you about Brett, I was only watching the news this morning and they interviewed a young couple with the obligatory toddler, and they were saying that if their mortgage went up any more, or prices of food or fuel went up any more they would be in real trouble…..they might not be able to pay their bills, or might even HAVE TO GET A SECOND JOB!

Good god, NO!  How awful!  End of the world as we know it for ordinary working class families to have to get a second job.  (Or - even worse - to invest a little bit of time or cash in learning how to be more useful to their employers so that they might be worth a bit more in the job they are in).  That woman with the toddler - bet she doesn’t work at all, not even from home….. infuriating.

Now….don’t get me started on this topic again - I’ve written about this before here and here and even Judith’s had a go here….am I starting to sound like John Harrison?

I can’t remember the time when I didn’t have a second job going, or was learning about something that might make me more successful or more money.  WHAT ARE THESE PEOPLE LIKE?

So I open my Feedreader and Brett McFall, while across the other side of the world, is getting just as infuriated as me with the whingers.  He’s just posted a blog posting that is both practical and metaphysical - one of the reasons I like Brett a lot and pay close attention to what he says is that he, like me, likes to combine the two.  Get your trackback and ping turned on though matie!

As I always say, you can sit at home and try and attract success and wealth, but if you don’t get off your butt and DO something about it, then nothing will happen.  It’s no secret that the “Big Secret” about “The Secret” is that you have to make it possible for TUT, The Universe and everything to help you.  Remember the joke about the drowning man and God?  Go watch “The Pursuit Of Happyness” with Will Smith if you don’t know that one.  Man, that film shows you that the most important part of the “Law Of Attraction” is “action”.  He never once blames anyone else - he just knows “it it’s to be it’s up to me”.

Anyway, back to Brett McFall…..he is having a good old rant on just this topic over at his excellent blog posting….go have a read!

“How to quickly and easily beat the petrol price rises while the rest of the world get’s pissed off about it”

“Yeah look, this subject annoys me quite a bit, as I’m sure you can tell by the headline I’ve used.  And it’s because I know that what you focus on most in life will dictate how you feel (and I’ll explain what I mean by this in just a moment).

So I want to help you do something about it so that you can get back to making a masterpiece of your life, instead of worrying about oil prices.

And right now at least, the media can hardly do a news bulletin without reminding you that oil and petrol prices (or “gas prices” if you’re from the U.S.) are “skyrocketing” and reinforcing how “bad” things are.

But you know what? They’re only telling you one side of the story. In case you haven’t realised, bad news sells. Switch on the TV any night and watch the news, and you’ll be guaranteed that 80% of the program will be dedicated to negative things.

Bad news keeps people watching. When more people watch, the TV stations can charge higher prices for the advertising spots. The stations make more money. Quite simple really.

So right now, they’re having a field day with oil prices that are increasing. But what I want to tell you is to forget about the prices. Yes, totally and completely forget about them……

Twitter Manifesto - A Great Guide

Michael Brito, over at the Britopian blog, has posted a useful guide to using Twitter successfully:

“I did a search for “twitter manifesto” and I am sad to say that I was not the first to coin this phrase. Darn, there goes my legacy.

For the last couple of months, my participation on Twitter has grown significantly and yes, I have become somewhat addicted. I tend to follow certain peeps who I think I can learn from as well as personal friends and colleagues. Recently I had an ego “reality check” when I realized that a few of those peeps don’t follow me back, even though I attempted to interact with them on several occasions. I then asked myself, “do I provide value to those who follow me?, can people learn from me?, am I not liked?” I always thought I was a pretty likable guy.

I realize that I was taking this way too personal and that the world does not revolve around me; a sad truth of course (jk). David Berkowitz actually sums this situation up quite eloquently. He gives some examples of why one might not reciprocate by following their followers:

They post too often
They post too infrequently
They only post about themselves
They only post links with no commentary
They’re boring
You’re overwhelmed by your current volume from who you’re following and you’re cutting back
You only follow people you really know
I would hope that the last two bullet points exemplify my personal experience.
Nonetheless, I decided to craft my own “Twitter Manifesto” just for Michael Brito. So, here goes.

Don’t expect the people you are following to follow you. It would be virtually impossible for someone like Jeremiah Owyang (@jowyang) to follow all of his 8,000 followers. He is already following over 5,000 and I give him tons of credit for that. If and when someone wants to follow you, it’ll happen organically. If they don’t, DON’T TAKE IT PERSONAL (I am talking to myself right now). If you don’t want to wait, you can always respond to and/or blog about one of their tweets.

Passive Income - Google Trends Rank Us!

When The Money Gym launched it’s first “Passive Income - 90 Day Internet Challenge” and sent out our press release, little did we think that we would trigger a spike in Google Trends tracking of the key phrase “passive income”.

Here’s how we explained it:

“Whilst the coaches at The Money Gym (www.themoneygym.com) are huge believers in the importance of educating ourselves about the various ways of creating wealth, they are equally aware that nothing beats learning by doing. So, they’ve decided to encourage people to just get down and do it with The Money Gym Passive Income Challenge.

Nowadays, we are always hearing about the big bucks that can be made on the internet, millions of dollars/pounds in one day sometimes, and the concept of making money while you sleep is an exciting one — if true. Wouldn’t it be fantastic to sit at home in our pajamas eating left-over Easter eggs, watching Jeremy Kyle on the telly and stopping only briefly to see how many more sales have pinged into our Paypal account?

Just one ebook sale per day @ £20, from one one-page website, would make an extra £7300 a year — enough for a new car or a couple of nice holidays. Two or three ebooks doing the same would make £21,900 — nearly a full time wage. The beauty of the Internet is that you do the work once, and the money keeps coming.

But the reality is that many people end up making a tenner here, twenty quid there, but never get much further.

In contrast, Nicola Cairncross, founder of the Money Gym, has built a six-figure business marketed entirely online and once made £14,000 in one weekend from one mailout. She knows exactly why people run out of steam in the quest for passive income — in her experience would-be internet entrepreneurs often aren’t prepared to focus attention in one place, on one thing, for long enough to make it work.

Nicola suggests focusing on just one thing - one information product, one niche or one passionate interest - and take consistent regular actions that include:

  • Creating a web presence — a sales page, a brochure site, a blog. All of them preferably.
  • Capturing visitors’ details, encouraging them to subscribe to ezines (online newsletters).
  • Turning visitors into raving fans by providing regular, maybe even daily, valuable content.
  • Having a system to automate the selling of our product.
  • Replicating the process.

As Nicola says, “like creating wealth, making money online is simple but it’s not easy, you have to get off your “assets”, learn new skills and take some action”.

To encourage — or even bully their Money Gym members to success, Nicola and business partner Judith Morgan have decided to set up an Internet Challenge. It’s a three-month personal challenge for anyone who has day-dreamed about creating passive income, or perhaps started but fizzled out along the way.

Anyone can join them for what will be a three-month personal challenge by visiting http://www.TheMoneyGymClub.com and joining the club at Silver Level.

Already people are getting excited about their goals, swapping resources and information…with Nicola on hand to keep everyone focused. And The Money Gym are further incentivising their new Silver members and supporting them in the Challenge by giving them free lifetime access to Nicola’s 12-Step Internet Marketing Home Study Course - which retails for £1450 - and membership of a private email support group. This will provide encouragement, resources and a kick up the backside!

The Money Gym has helped hundreds of people along the road to financial independence (and created millionaires along the way) via their 1:2:1 Money Gym Gold wealth coaching programme. It is a powerful, practical down to earth programme that teaches participants a solid and proven way of creating wealth, with a choice of ways to suit your personality. These could be a choice of, or a combination of high risk, high return investment, solid bricks and mortar, or building a business that you can sell or use to set you up for life”.

So 60 days in, how are the participants getting on?  I thought I would ask them to update you here on the blog - which apart from inspiring you all, will give their projects a useful link from a blog now ranking 3/10 on Google Page Rank.

So guys, who is going to be first to step up to the comments box?
